fighting eel fall/resort 2011

parker * harper

i have been feeling a bit style deprived so let's spend the week admiring fall looks from a few of our favorite designers! last winter, fighting eel's fishie tote caught my eye so you can imagine my delight upon finding the whimsical pattern revived for lan & rona's resort 2011 collection. mixed in are vibrant tie-dyes issued in flowy tops and versatile tube dresses-slash-skirts along with gorgeous structured sheaths (dress camryn earns a special mention for its thoughtfully placed stripes) that promise to transition easily from 9-to-5 to date night.

since a fall 2011 peek is overdue, a few favorites have also been rounded up for your viewing pleasure. i can't quite decide between the bright pops of emerald or the elegant cream colored silhouettes . . . so sophisticated!

more to adore after the jump . . . plus details on this weekend's sample sale.

new peeks: roberta oaks spring 2011

palaka!

nothing says old school hawaii like a palaka print so i am thrilled to see designer roberta oaks pay an homage to the iconic pattern in her new line for the fellas. retro styled floral prints also make an appearance in this hipster update on the aloha shirt, but kama'aina will always embrace the palaka which is a sweet reminder of plantation days gone by before big box stores arrived and mom & pop shops like arakawas closed their doors forever.

a handful of m's styles are made in snazzy vintage fabrics and, as such, limited in number with the remaining looks cut from a breezy cotton/linen blend from japan. springtime also brings new loveliness for the ladies with updates on old favorites and demure additions in pretty pastels and chipper polka dots perfect for sunday brunch and skipping about town with your sweetie.

how cute would it be to spot a couple styled in coordinating ro outfits?

  • secret code: easter
  • expires: sat, apr 23rd

or, starting tomorrow, hop over to roberta's studio to scoop up spring loveliness just in time for easter weekend:

fighting eel spring 2011

hippie

by far my favorite red carpet moment on oscar night was the tie-dye ball gown designed by christian siriano discovered during the pre-show marathon. i was immediately reminded of fighting eel's spring 2011 collection filled with carefree bohemian loveliness rocking a modern day riff on the wardrobe staple found inside any good hippie's closet.

from a swoon-y goddess maxi to floaty tops, i just love how designers lan chung and rona bennett have put their spin on the tie-dye trend. the abstract swirls and artful splatters are grounded by this season's palette of smoky neutrals brightened by the occasional pop of color making each piece a striking complement when paired with the style essentials.

see if you agree with more of my favorite spring looks after the jump . . .

rona marie jewelry

if you happened by fighting eel's charming new boutique in chinatown since its doors opened last fall, it's quite possible you found yourself instantly smitten with the display of jewelry surrounding the checkout stand as you waited to pay for your purchases. what you may not have realized is amongst the sparkle is a side line of adornment made by fe co-founder & designer rona bennett.

constructed in her off-time as a diversion from the demands of running a fashion label, the naturally gorgeous glam features geometric gemstones and tumbled crystals intuitively combined in the most modern arrangements. the stones are curated from around the globe with rona mixing and mingling elements until each piece feels just right.

the quartz and agate amulets are an especially lovely antidote to the daily stresses of life, wouldn't you agree?

i pined for a few pieces when i popped into fe while home before the holidays, and only just discovered that most of the sparkle is one of a kind . . . never to be made in the exact same way again. an occasional exception is made for a handful of earring designs which may, at the discretion of the designer, be repeated. good to know, no?

remember that tip if you plan on heading down to first friday tomorrow night when the fighting eel flagship, the exclusive stockist of rona marie jewelry, hosts a trunk show of her newest concoctions. local psychic nichole myers will also be offering angel card readings if you seek a peek into your future.

p.s. jewelry is priced from $24 to $154, however the collection is not offered online so faraway friends should consider contacting the shop directly to order.

new peeks: roberta oaks holiday 2010

beth

i must apologize for my lack of posts lately but purging my nest and digital life have become my top distractions in hopes of starting with an emptier canvas in the new year. hopefully, now that it is written for all to see my grand plans will be a success!

you may have noticed a brief mention of roberta oaks' first ever holiday collection in last week's scoop, and i gathered up a glimpse for those who have yet to click over to the official website to preview. the glittery group of metallic knit minis promise to sparkle just a little brighter beneath christmas twinkle lights. not to mention the pretty new frocks look quite cute paired with tights.

peek the cap sleeved claire (my favorite) and the holiday edition of the always lovely quaint after the jump!

construction details like a soft lining of bamboo and organic cotton will be very welcome news if you have ever suffered through an uncomfortably scratchy encounter with an unlined metallic garment.

there are five silhouettes offered in a shimmering palette of copper, gold and silver joined by cheery red and green, the always sophisticated black, and a bright pop of cobalt. (note: colors vary depending on style.)

you can peek the holiday collection (average price tag: $160) in the online shop or visit roberta's studio for a little help to find the perfect holiday cocktail dress.

p.s. roberta will be joining project runway finalist andy south on the judging panel for the bella project's rule the runway fundraiser on nov 16th.

heather brown: high tide peeks

one of my regrets from my last trip home was flying off the island before heather brown's new art show debuted at chinatown boardroom. lucky for us, gallery owner (& new mama!) jackie was kind enough to gather up glimpses of many of the original artworks currently hanging on the gallery walls. longtime readers may guess that i am just crushing over heather's collection of little birdies in all their pint-sized glory . . . aren't they even cuter repeated row after row after row?

the show is filled with an array of small and big waves with nary a surfer in sight. other pieces include paintings on reclaimed wood salvaged from a north shore bungalow, and artwork introducing a more realistic style of wave.

no. 472 * 441 * 473
no. 429 * 438 * 440

if you are off-island and spotted a new favorite for your personal gallery, you are welcome to email or phone the gallery for purchasing details. (fyi: the 6x6 mini paintings start at $400.) paintings are numbered but jackie also shared that you can name your painting and heather will sign the back to make the title official!

and, if you are looking for more gently priced options, screenprinted totes ($30) and prints on sugar cane paper ($40) round out the show offerings.

  • show dates: now to sat, sep 25th
  • where: 1160 nu'uanu avenue, chinatown
  • gallery hours: tue to sat, 11a to 4p

{mahalo jackie! and congratulations on the addition of the very adorable little miss parker to your 'ohana!}
